asked questions
In the many years we have provided a "home" for students at Concordia, we have noticed that many students pose the same questions when they call or write our office. Check out the questions and answers below to see if you may have wanted to ask the same question. If appropriate, an answer is followed by a link to more information of the same topic.
Questions:
When will I find out my room and roommate assignment? You should received your room and roommate assignment around mid-July. You will receive a mailing that will include your room assignment, your roommate name and contact information. top
Every housing applicaiton is carefully reviewed and efforts are made to match you with a roommate who has similar interests and living habits. top
May I request a particular roommate? If you have a student with whom you would like to live, you must include their name on your housing application. That person must then request to room with you on their housing application. Once we receive confirmation that both parties have made the request, then the match is made and you are assigned a room. top
All first semester freshman are strongly encouraged to have roommates. Priority for single rooms is given to upper-level students. top
Do you have co-ed residence halls? Yes and no, Concordia has five Coed by floor residence halls. They include Brown, Bogstad Manor, Bogstad East, Boe-Olsen, and the International Center. These halls typically house upperclass students. top
All rooms are furnished with beds, mattreses and mattress covers, dressers, closets, desks or study tables, chairs, window coverings, and telephones. To learn about the unique furnishings in your hall, see your hall page. top
If I bring some of my own furniture, will Concordia remove and store their furniture? No, you are required to retain all college furnishing in your room. top
What should I bring with me for my room? There are a variety of things you might want to bring with you when you move in to the residence hall. In addition to your personal items, you may want to consider bringing
You will want to discuss with your roommate what additional items you may be bringing to avoid duplication. top
There are several items that are prohibited, for safety and policy reasons. These include:
When you arrive on campus, your Resident Assistant will review the policies with you to make sure you don't have any prohibited items. top
While the campus has several computer labs, including labs in most of the halls, you may want to consider bringing your own computer. Each room has access for either Apple Macintosh or IBM-compatible computers, which may be connected to the college's network. top
Will I have access to cable TV? Yes, cable television, including a campus movie network, is available in each residence hall room. You should plan to bring your own cable cord to connect from the cable jack to your television. top
Can I bring a refrigerator and microwave? Yes, each room may have one refrigerator (no larger than 4.5 cu ft and 1.5 amps) and one microwave (no more than 1200 watts). So you'll want to coordinate this with your roommate. top Can I build a loft for my room? You may - unless you are assigned to the college apartments, Brown, or Park Region Hall. If you decide you would like to loft your beds, we recommend renting a bed loft from our loft provider, College Services, Inc. (www.csilofts.com). This is the easiest and least expensive way to loft your bed. If you decide to build a loft, or otherwise alter the configuration of the beds supplied by the college, we’ll first ask you to sign a liability waiver. In addition, you should design the loft to include the college’s bedspring or a full length of 5/8” plywood under the mattress. The highest point of the loft should also not exceed a height of 6’ so you’ll have some room to sit up without hitting your head! Keep in mind too, that remaining portions of the college-owned bed must be stored in the room to reduce the likelihood of misplaced or lost pieces. top
Yes, but only if your pet happens to be a fish. No other pets are allowed in the residence halls. top
What are the dimensions of my room? If you are assigned to Hallett, Erickson, Hoyum, or Livedalen, please see your hall page to get a better idea of your room's dimensions. If you are assigned to Brown, Fjelstad, or Park Region, please contact Brenda in the Physical Plant at 218.299.4564, as all rooms in these halls vary in size. Please be sure to have your room number handy when calling. top
What are my options for storage of my personal items in the halls? Many of the halls have small storage rooms for large or bulky items, such as suitcases and off season clothing. However, space is limiited, so you may want to consider leaving items at home that you don't think you'll need on campus. top
May I see my room when I visit campus? Most halls that accomodate first year students have a model room which allows you to see what your room looks like. During the summer, the residence halls are often used to accomodate summer conference attendees, or they are being prepared for your arrival in the fall. This, and the limited availability of staff, make it difficult for you to see the room you will be occupying in the fall. If you are an incoming student, we encourage you to coordinate your visit with Admissions so they can show you the model room. top
Are the residence halls open during breaks? Residence halls remain open during breaks with the exception of the Christmas break. All halls, with the exception of Bogstad Manor, Bogstad East, Boe-Olsen, the International Center, and the Townhouses, are closed over the Christmas break, and all students (with the exception of apartment residents) are required to leave. top
How do I meet new friends at Concordia? There are many many ways to get involved and meet new people on campus! Some options include athletics, campus organizations, hall council, student government... The list goes on and on. top
Are there requirements about how long I must live on campus? Because the college places a high value on the positive personal and educational outcomes of a residential experience, all full-time students are required to live on campus unless the student meets one of the following exemptions (documentation is required):
1) have completed four semesters of full-time enrollment at Concordia College or an institution of higher education 2) living at home in the immediate area (within 15 miles of campus) with their parents 3) living at home with a spouse or dependent child 4) 21 years of age or older on or before Oct. 1 to be exempt for the academic year, or on or before February 15 to be exempt for spring semester
Students who have special needs that cannot be met by the residence hall environment may apply to the director of residence life for a special exemption from the residency requirement. Because the college is committed to the role of residential living as an integral part of the student’s educational experience, such exemptions will be granted only in cases of exceptional need or hardship. Documentation would be required in these cases. Applying for an exemption of the policy does not automatically release a student from the requirement. (Please note: requests for exemptions from the college’s board plan should be made in writing to the director of auxiliary services).
