fjelstad hall

PictureFjelstad Hall and Cornerstone Resource Center houses 134 freshman and upperclass women. This English Tudor-styled hall was constructed in 1938 and partially renovated in 1984. Residents enjoy the spacious wood-beamed lounge and large rooms. Each floor also features its own kitchenette. The hall is named after Helga Fjelstad, director of food service and womens residence hall preceptress for 33 years. The Frida Nilsen Lounge, named after a long-time English teacher and dean of women, is used for selected campus meetings and small dinners. Once housing the college's library during the years 1943 to 1955, the basement of Fjelstad now contains the Cornerstone Offices for some student-run services and private study and TV lounges for the residents. It was renovated in 1994 and was designed to provide office space for college-recognized student organizations. There are several offices assigned to individual student groups, in addition to a larger space, the Cornerstone Exchange, which provides shared office and work space for several organizations. Adjacent to the Exchange is the Cornerstone Resource Center. The center provides resources and staff to assist students in the implementation of campuswide or small group programming and in the development of leadership and management skills as they relate to campus organizations and/or personal growth. Some of the resources located in the center include books, articles, videotapes, resource files, and other supportive materials and equipment such as clip art, a helium tank for balloons, and a button-maker. A large, inviting workspace encourages individual students and small groups to use these resources to enhance their co-curricular experience.
