While the Office of Student Leadership and Service subscribes to no one definition
of leadership, the college's mission statement suggests that there are some
key values that provide the context for any definition.
Every person has the capacity to be a leader. Effective leadership
is learned.
Leadership is not always positional. A person does not need to
be elected, appointed or hired to be a leader.
Leadership is different than management. In general, leadership
emphasizes people and has more to do with creating a vision while management
emphasizes task and has more to do with getting work accomplished in an
efficient manner.
Leaders are servants first. Leadership is not power-oriented but
instead as the mission of the college suggests, leaders influence the affairs
of the world through a dedication to a Christian life.
There are many opportunities for students to act as leaders while attending
Concordia. Links to some of those opportunities are provided below but of course,
the opportunities are infinite. Contact the Office of Student Leadership and
Service for more information.
Student Association provides opportunities for elected and appointed leaders. Students serve as representatives in the student government structure as well as on the various committees of the college. Several of the Student Association commissions provide opportunities for involvement beyond the appointed positions, for example, the Campus Ministry Commission and Campus Entertainment Commission.
Campus Service Comission provides the opportunity to be involved in Service-Learning with a community-based organization. There are 18-20 staff positions that are filled each fall and the terms of office run from December to December.
Student organizations provide
the chance to be involved in a group with a special interest.
There are many, many other opportunities to be involved. Contact the Office
of Student Leadership and Service for more information.
