Know the ABC's of Viral Hepatitis

Hepatitis A

Transmitted by close intimate contact or by eating or drinking something contaminated with the feces of someone who has the disease. Good personal hygiene, preventative dietary precautions and avoiding sexual contact will help prevent exposure. Vaccine is available to prevent Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B

Transmitted the same way HIV is spread and is more contagious. Abstinence is the most effective protection. Unsafe sexual practices and sharing needles puts one at risk. A series of three doses of vaccine provides protection.

Hepatitis C

Transmitted by bodily fluids or shared needles. High-risk behaviors such as unsafe sex or sharing needles should be avoided. There is no vaccine available to prevent Hepatitis C.

Additional information regarding Hepatitis is available at Concordia's Student Health Center, as is a vaccine for Hepatitis A and B. The vaccine is available at minimal cost at the Health Center.

The American College Health Association and Centers for Disease Control are also recommending vaccination against meningitis, particularly for first-year students living in residence halls. The vaccine is safe, highly effective and will be available to students upon request. The vaccine is available at minimal cost at the Health Center. Contact the Student Health Center for additional information at 299-3662.
